Interview with Ephexis

Saturday 16th of September 2006

Ville Sorsa | Rx / FINRG

Tell us a bit of your history? How did you got involved in electronic music and later on hard-dance? Do you have any musical background?

We both started our musical career in heavy metal bands, Alex was the drummer for the ragga metal band 'Skindread'. After getting frustrated with the metal scene and intrigued be the psychedelic potential of the dance world, we looked to dance music to satisfy our creative outlet and further our careers and development as engineers.

Adam and friends ran a regular freeform/hard dance party called 'Hard Acid Style' in Southampton, UK - When Adam heard Alex's music, he instantly made him a resident of these parties. It was not long after this, that we started writing music together, and formed Ephexis.

What kind of gear do you use in your studio?

We use a mixture of hardware and software - We use Logic 7 as our main sequencer. Our synth lineup includes: Alesis A6 Andromeda, Virus B , Roland Juno 106, Nord Modular G2, Roland Jupiter 6, Roland TB-303, Roland SH-101, Novation Super Nova.

Software wise, we use all the Logic synths (ES1, ES2 etc), Superwave Pro, Pro 53, Imposcar, Plogue Bidule and the OhmBoyz plugins.

Who do you think has had the biggest influence in your sound? Do you have any particular music styles or artists that you really like?

There are a few people that have a big influence on our sound - mainly: Space Buddha, BT, Hybrid, Prodigy, Ozric Tentacles,
Fear Factory, Senser, Load Star, Machine Head, NIN Style? Style doesn't really bother us! Were are into quality!

In your own words, how would you describe your sound?

We write extreme psychedelic hard dance, ranging from Freeform and Psytrance, to breaks, drum'n'bass and Dub. We tend to keep it high paced with intense arrangements and aggressive sound scaping!

How's the scene in your country? What have been the recent big things in your scene?

The scene in the U.K. is hard for us - the UK love Happy Hardcore, so our sound is a little too 'different' for a lot of the dance crowd over here - But, we do get our tracks on albums like Hardcore Heaven, and Bonkers quite regularly, which have really helped us promote our sound. The main interest in our music seems to come from outside our  country!

What has been the biggest / most hilarious moment in your career so far?

The biggest moment in our career was playing at Godspeed, in Sydney, Australia - It was an awesome event, in an awesome arena, with an awesome crowd of about 5000 aussie ravers loving it!! What a buzz!

The most hilarious moment was probably at the same gig, when after we had finished our set - Alex, with out realising it, shut down his laptop and played the Windows XP shutdown sound really loud through the P.A. in the intro to the next Dj's set! It was a bit embarrassing! Probably more so for the other DJ! Sorry mate!smile

From all the tracks you've produced, what is your favorite one?

Good question!! Adam's favorite track is Proton Pack, a hard psytrance tune with some ripping riffs. Alex's favorite is Reactor, a break beat, shred driven, space punk anthem containing some nasty synth abuse!

From all the people you've worked with in the studio, from who have you learned the most? Who do you respect the most?

We learned a lot in our short time in the studio with Sharkey - But we definitely had most fun with Rx and Toni Carbon Based, and C.O.A from Australia! Our favorite result of all our collaborations has to be 'Spatial Inversion'  which was one of our earlier Oli-G Vs tracks.

Any new releases coming soon and/or what are you working on at the moment?

We have a few vinyls in the pipeline - The next Kaotik EP should be out in a few weeks, and we have a couple of vinyls lined up with Nu Energy too. We're currently working on building our new studio, and once that's finished,  we'll be starting on a new breed of psytrance!

What do you know about Finland and its crowds? How do you think it differs from your native crowds?

When we played at Konemetsa, we realised that the Finland crowd likes it hard and nasty - which is fantastic for us! The British crowd prefer it a little happier. We feel a lot more at home playing to people in Finland than we do in the UK!!!

Do you have any particular to say to the finnish crowds? What will be expected from your massive set?

It is going to be a no-holds-barred, extraterrestrial, psychedelic space punk mash up of epic proportions! Ranging from 170 - 154,000 BPM! We will be taking no Prisoners!

3 favorite tracks of all time?

Space Buddha - Storm Reaction
Prodigy - Erm, most of em!
Senser - What's going on?

3 current favorites?

Eskimo - My Rave
Rex - Atom Smasher
The Rogue Element - Let Me Breath

Main ambitions for year 2007?

To write lots of fresh sounds in our fresh studio! We also intend to play at more international events, and break into the Psytrance, Breakbeat and Drum'n'Bass scenes.

Any last words? Links etc you would like to share with the public?

We're just re-creating the Ephexis website, and it will soon include lots of cool music downloads, album and MP3 sales, cool desktop images and a music equipment review section - Keep your eye on it! http://www.ephexis.co.uk !!!
